  2. Proof of Financial Stability
  3. Safety Record

  1. Proof of Insurances

    All general contractors need to provide proof of these insurances:

    1. General Liability
    2. Workers Compensation Insurance
    3. Builder's Risk Insurance (covers your structure from loss while in the building process)
    4. Auto Insurance
    5. Assurance that all Subcontractors are Insured
  2. Proof of Financial Stability

    1. Years A Company Has Been In Business – Five years or longer
    2. Type of License: In the State of North Carolina a ‘general contractor with an unlimited license has to keep working capital of $150,000 or more.
    3. Bank Reference stating indicating their financial stability and character.
    4. Letters from Subcontractors on payment history.
    5. Does the contractor have a Dunn & Bradstreet Listing

    1. Ask about their safety record on the job
  4. References

    1. Can the General Contractor provide you with at least 5 references from their most current job?
    2. Questions You Might Want To Ask References:
      1. Was the project completed on schedule?
      2. Was the project within budget?
      3. Did they meet or exceed your expectation for quality?
      4. Did they have any safety occurrences during the project?
      5. *Always ask Why if the answer is no for questions 1-3.
      6. *Ask ‘what was the situation surrounding an accident and how was it handled' for question 4.
